Despite the use of electronic devices to communicate in almost every kind of circumstance, many people still work with hard copy materials. The grammar checkers on most computers are, well, inadequate. The spell checking is pretty good, but you have to know which word you need. Sometimes the word is spelled correctly, but the meaning is incorrect.
Since the age of fill-in-the-blank education, a large portion of the population doesn't even know what a semicolon is for. Communicating with abbreviations has damaged sentence structure. Most high school and college papers are AWFUL. How do I know? I tutor. I read.
Advertising is full of incorrect language. Cars don't go further; they go farther. I cringe when some of those ads play. However, I digress.
Editing is deeply personal, even if the editor didn't write the book or article. So if you happen to be in a position to edit anything at all, you will be better served by printing out the text and getting a good writing instrument to handle the job.
We carry everything from Non-Photo blue pencils to the reds, greens, purples and magentas of the fashion pen packs. If you prefer ink pens to edit (yikes, you have confidence!) the assortment of line sizes is really tempting. We have .38mm on up to 1.4mm. That's a pretty good selection.
If I have a large project, I sometimes use different colors to date when I made the correction so I have a reference if several passes are needed. It's a great way to keep up with the updates. This is also effective when you share a document online. Using text colors to designate who has done the revision helps speed things up if there are questions later.
Here are some pencils that will do the job, and will erase if you change your mind:
Mirado Black Warrior #2 pencil (sadly the #1 is now gone)
Clearpoint .5mm mechanical pencil (it has a clicker on the side)
Papermate Infinite Lead .5mm (the picture doesn't do it justice)
Vibz .9mm dark lead with the gooshy grip for those who bear down on the page
If you are working on your own project, use something bright and pleasing to your eye and temperament. That way the blow is softened if you have to change something brilliant you wrote....(well, it does help a little)
